painting with Mary

Once again Mary Katrantzou's demi-couture print galore
came to inspire New York-based ”sleepless talent” visual
artist and photographer Erik Madigan Heck in blurring
anew the subtle boundary between fine arts and fashion
photography with style and charm by the truckload.

Mary Katrantzou's staggering outfits from the s/s 2012
lookbook make me whoop for joy yet the way Heck
paints with light in his art-historical influenced style
is spectacular, the way he transforms the environment
in a stage for the model's performance as well the
painterly use of light that every time makes me think
of Vermeer's 'Girl with a pearl earring'.

Yet Erik's intention is never to document the appearance
of the subject as a realistic representation, rather to evoke
its theatricality creating a more aesthetically dramatic
illustration in which already disguised subjects such as
models become characters arranged on a stage acting
narratives informed by references from the history of art.
