the Queen of cocktail dress

Scandinavian aesthetics is all around us, just think of chain stores
blockbusters selling affordable home furniture design or spruce
ready-to-wear garments yet there's a small group of talented
Nordic hardworking designers who since the late 90's
are fully aware they can push their own limits further.

In the last few days, “Nordic:New York”, a showcase part
of New York's Fashion Week organized by The King Collective,
the local sales and marketing firm, came to introduce
very interesting northern talents, among them the
imaginative Finnish creator Tiia Vanhatapio
dubbed as “The Queen of Cocktail Dress”.

A boreal genius whose creations have a surreal, iconoclastic
look and a very personal brave style: she displayed her sultry
s/s 2011 “Druidess” collection in the footsteps of her previous
celebrated works as the famous bestselling, seductive black
satin cocktail dress with pockets named “Mamie Dress”.

Tiia Vanhatapio is a well established figure in the fashion world,
she came to celebrate her label's fifth anniversary at the end
of August with a stunning show at the Hotel Katajanokka,
a former detention center, starting Helsinki Design Week.

I really appreciated her AW 10/11 collection named “Souls”
with strong echoes from the past with veil hats, Babushka
knitworks and the already mentioned Mamie Dress
but the Finnish virtuoso has even developed
a newborn and a wedding clothing lines.
Tiia reinvents common baby clothing by innovative
folding, wrapping and fastening methods combining
them with plain black and unusual patterns.

Tiia Vanhatapio's creations are commonly amazing and
breathtaking as a boreal aurora, we are going to hear from
her again at the upcoming capsule trade show still in New York.
