South Africa far beyond soccer

All eyes are on South Africa for the soccer World Cup quarter
finals but not only: last week Johannesburg showcased some
of the continent's leading designers during Africa Fashion Week.

Joburg serves as the backdrop for the African runways for
seven years now with designers from over twenty countries
on the continent jetting in to exhibit their trans-seasonal
2010 collections at the Sandton Convention Centre venue.

Established South African fashion heavy-weights like Marianne
Fassler, David Tlale, Errol Arendz and Nkhensani Nkosi shared
the catwalks with global talented designers such Laquan Smith,
Mimi Plange, sisters Ayaan and Idyl Mohalim, Ituen Basi and
Sakina Msa to name a few.

Xuly Bët, the well known brand line designed by Malian native
and French educated Lamine Badian Kouyaté, opened the show
with a surprise: I was used to his bright colors (the 'début defilé dans
le metro parisien'
is impossible to forget) but here he came to
present a total black show with architectural shaped dresses,
a clever employment of thecnological materials in a
well accomplished mix of elegance and research.

Nigerian designer Ituen Basi showed a well balanced collection
between traditional African colors and patterns and bon ton
reminiscences: brightly colored dresses with wide skirts and slim
tops, high waisted belts and handbags reflect an easy 60s allure.

Sakina Msa, Comoran native designer based in France, displayed
a very cool collection in which black & white, bright blue hues
and silver touches are skillfully mixed for well designed silhouettes
emphasizing shoulders with pads and achieving a soft, tasteful result.

Africa Fashion Week came to shatter again the stereotypical
image of African fashion consisting of over colored sarongs
and fishtail tops while positioning the South African event as
one of the most riveting happenings.
Waka waka African fashion!
